VASARI "Starbound"

Two years after its completion, we released “Starbound” by Vasari. It was borne out of Matin Vasari’s undying love for the works of art that he finds in metal music, science fiction literature and comic books, world cinema, and epic computer games.

Order the limited edition digipak CD here:

Vasari is a solo project, meaning that all music and lyrics are created by Matin Vasari and his many influences, but nonetheless he is grateful for having the privilege of being supported by close friends on their instruments.

In order to grant you a little insight, some of the collaborators have tried to sum up their thoughts about the creation of the album.

Christian Kolf (session guitars)
Matin has been a close friend and Valborg supporter since 2002. Originally I knew him as rapper who was very much into metal, more than any of the true metal guys I knew back then. Back in 2007, we were hanging at my home, we made a little black metal song together and I urged him to play guitar, because I knew he had the right phantasy.

Some years later, we were talking about the dreams of making one’s own metal album, I said "man, you always dreamed about doing metal, just do it, you had piano classes as a teenager, you know how it works". I gave him a guitar and he just wrote "Starbound", without being a long-time experienced guitar player. He had the right vision, which in my opinion is more important than anything else. I know many people who dream about making music but think they are too old or untalented to play an instrument. I just tell them that all they need is phantasy. Anyway, Matin had that. He showed me the demos to "Starbound" and asked me to play guitars on this album. I took a listen and got a very fresh oldschool feeling. I had to think of In The Woods... and old Tiamat and enjoyed songs like "Cosmo Canyon" and "Earthglow". I'm fortunate to have been a part of this and to have given him something back. Another circle is complete.

Patrick Schroeder (session drums)
For the Vasari session I constructed an analogue digital hybrid by adding an old DDRUM-AT module to my Evolution set (20” kick; 10/12/14 toms) by Drumsound, an Italian drum manufacturer and my former endorser). The mix of electronic sounds from the early 90ies and vintage microphones (Sennheiser MD441 for the snare) created a crunchy oldschool sound that does not sound too clinical and carries a certain warmth.

The recording session took place in an old classroom with a gigantic window front. During the recording of “Maelstrom” a thunderstorm made rain hit the windows, a fitting atmosphere for that song.

Matin Vasari
From the day when I first started to listening metal at the age of 11 until today I never completely tired of it. There was a time of about two years, at the beginning of the 2000s, in which I did not listen to metal so much, mainly because the transition to the new Nuclear Blast-style modern productions had been completed and basically ALL new albums sucked production-wise (something I understood although I was still listening to a cheap shit of sound system even at that age). It has become a little better again, which I am very thankful for. But still, I do not listen to too many new releases.

I am not a very good instrumentalist, but I can play all these parts and did so for the sketch versions. But I play very badly. It really does not sound good enough. That is why Christian Kolf of Valborg was needed so badly.

He also was the one who made me start working on making metal music. He invited me to do vocals for Slon, an deutschgrind project, that I did my first metal-related vocals for. At that time I was influenced a lot by my rapping as well as Apollyon’s work on Cadaver’s Necrosis. And later he told me that I was stupid to play Guitar Hero on the Playstation instead of writing metal songs. He was right and soon I bought an old ESP Ltd H-401FM, which has served me splendidly for all my needs in combination with an old POD amp emulator.

So I can make songs with all necessary elements except, of course, for drumming. While I can maintain a basic 4/4 beat, I could never find the time to even start to think about practising on playing a double bass drum beat. I heard there are talented people who can just sit down and do it, but I cannot, unfortunately. And I need double bass! I can’t even imagining writing a metal song without at least some double bass. That is why I Patrick Schroeder was such an immensely important part of this album.

Other than that, I can say that I am working on the follow-up. I have written about 4 songs and have plenty of riffs lying around. First I developed a concept that is going to continue the story of 2001 Nights with a new storyline, now I will continue writing songs along the storyline. Future!

Because I love lists to show off knowledge about cool albums, here’s a more or less random list of ten not totally obvious albums you could listen to in order to feel a little bit like me:

Virgin Steele – The Marriage of Heaven and Hell Part II
Dismal Euphony – Soria Moria Slott
Cadaver - Necrosis
Arcturus – Aspera Hiems Symfonia
Domine – Eternal Champion
Abhorrence – Completely Vulgar Compilation
Mundanus Imperium – The Spectral Spheres Coronation
Iced Earth – Night of the Stormrider
Altus – Innerspace
Stratovarius – Destiny
